Semester One Complete!

It’s funny what happens when you get a break. I’ve been going full steam ahead for this entire semester and now suddenly I have no readings to complete, no flash cards to go over, or any papers to write and it’s a very strange feeling. Don’t get me wrong, I’m loving catching up with my family and playing with my dog, but for the first few days off I had this feeling like I was missing something, like an assignment or exam or something. We did get some of our marks back though and I think that this meme from Spotted at Mac sums it up just perfectly.

That moment you get your mark back on an exam you thought you failed… but you actually did amazing.

Aside from attending some family holiday parties, I’m reading fiction and working over the break. I also get to spend some time with my partner, who I haven’t seen in ages. He was only supposed to stay for two days but surprised me and stayed for a whole week! It was spectacular.

As some of you know, I love to crochet… At the beginning of the school year, one of our professors said (jokingly) that only knitters were allowed to practice at a nearby midwifery clinic. She further specified, no crocheters allowed!

Obviously, devastated and suddenly panicked that my entire career was hanging in the balance on my ability (or lack of) to knit, I knew that one of my goals over the holiday break was to learn this essential midwifery skill. So over the last few days, while watching Gilmore Girls on Netflix until 2 am, I’ve been learning to knit. I am proud to announce that I have mastered the knit stitch AND the purl stitch!

I’m excited about school starting up again in a couple of weeks! I miss my friends and believe it or not, A&P. I even had a dream about the cerebellum and basal ganglia the other night… #nerd

As for semester highlights… my cervicovaginal specimens presentation is one of them. My partner and I made vaginas out of beer cups and sponges and got the class to practice using speculums and “finding” a cervix. Not a part of the curriculum, but a really fun activity nonetheless.

Getting voted to be the MSMC Social Content Manager was another huge highlight! Follow our page to get all the updates on what’s going on in McMaster Midwifery!

The birth that I saw was incredible.

Honestly, there were too many amazing moments to count.

Last but certainly not least, I have some huge thank you’s to send out… I could not have completed this semester without the help and support of so many people in my life:

My friends at school. Every single one has been amazing. I can’t explain my love for these women. Every time I had a bad day and needed to talk or just a hug, or someone to give me the cole’s notes version of a reading I wasn’t able to complete the night before, you all were there. Every single one of these women is going to be a spectacular midwife.

My family. Specifically my mom and my sister. They have put up with my meltdowns about school, driven me to work, cooked bacon and eggs for me at 10 pm while I was pulling a late night studying. Thanks for taking care of me.

My partner. For being my personal TA… Quizzing me over skype until the wee hours of the morning until I felt prepared for midterms and tests. For taking my calls and consoling me from 600 kilometers away when I was stressed and for listening to my feminist/healthcare rants. He has also become quite the midwifery advocate with his paramedic colleagues and that support makes me smile.

Here’s to 2016! Happy New Year and I hope you all had a fantastic holiday!
